First, to give you some background, and quickly, (I promise) I wanted you to know this article has taken me over 10 years to write. No, not literally, but with all the research involved, it does take time for testing and trials. So enjoy the fruits of my labor! "There's nothing like a freshly installed copy of Firefox, which is, in my view, the best software package, but what makes this open-source browser so special is the ability to customize it via extensions and themes to really make it yours. The problem is, there are so many available addons, it's tough to know what's worth installing and what's just going to junk up your system." - Computerworld I've been using Mozilla Firefox for about 10 years now (my current version is; Firefox 3.6.8 because the newest one 4. seems to have gliches with many addons and extensions) and have never been happier. Like many writers, researchers, bloggers and freelancers have found out, IE (Internet Explorer) isn't as safe or as user friendly as they'd like you to believe, and I even tried Opera for awhile, but there's too many sites and functions it's not compatible with to warrant using. Firefox is an all around better browser and much more customizable as far as I'm concerned. Over the years I've found many addons from Firefox that were great for awhile and turned out not so great after using them, or have found others that have been replaced or combined into a single addon that are so handy for my research, I couldn't live without them now. Many of the extensions have problems, so to find out which ones are 'problematic' I looked up Mozilla Knowledgebase as well as their bug tracker to do some research and found many addons and extensions that have performance related issues...but I'll save that issue for another article as this one is focusing on the best. So, without further ado... Here's a list of my favorite top 12 "must have" Mozilla Firefox addons for any online writer, researcher, blogger or freelancer: (in no particular order) 1. Mozilla Firefox Addon: Web Search Pro Web Search Pro is perfect for the researcher who's always looking up information from multiple sources. With Web Search Pro, you can "Search the web the way you like." It's a new and innovative way to search the web: just select any text (by highlighting it) and a drop down box opens to choose from any search engine or type of search you'd like to accomplish. Really easy and handy for a writer, researcher, blogger or freelancer. Just select as many Search Engines as you like; for instance; Wikipedia, IMDB, Google, Yahoo, AllRecipes; (reference, music, movies, food, computer & tech are just a few categories you can choose your search from) all completely customizable and easy to use. 2. Mozilla Firefox Addon: AddThis I use this often, in conjunction with HootSuite, as HootSuite only includes social media so this is pertinent for quickly sharing your articles and content. For more info on the wonders of HootSuite I wrote an article here. "AddThis for Firefox is the best add-on to make sharing and bookmarking simple. Have all your favorite web 2.0 social networking, bookmarking, blogging, and e-mail services at your fingertips. Share any page, anytime, with anyone." 3. Mozilla Firefox Addon: *Zotero "Pronounced [zoh-TAIR-oh] is a free, easy-to-use Firefox extension to help you collect, manage, and cite your research sources." This is especially handy if you are writing a larger piece with multiple layers and have multiple sources. I use it for keeping track of ideas with their resources at a glance both for future and current articles. It sits at the bottom of your screen so anytime you are visiting a site with good info you want to save for future (or current) use, just click on zotero and it opens up at the bottom half of the page your on, then you just select (highlight) the info you want to keep and create a new item or note with the links intact. Awesome! It also keeps everything nice and neat in folders (you create) in your library. 4. Mozilla Firefox Addon:Split Browser Split Browser addon has been a life saver. Pasting from one tab to another can be both bothersome and cumbersome. "This extension makes the process a breeze by splitting your browser window into two (or three, or four) panels, allowing for instant copying and pasting between pages." It's so cool, you won't know how you managed without it. 5. Mozilla Firefox Addon: Word Count Plus; I don't use this as often as I should, but when needed, it's sure a handy dandy to have around. Word Count Plus does just what you think it would plus a lot more. It counts number of words in selected text and can add the count to a running total. Pefect for those who need to keep track of how many words, characters and other statistics of your written work. There are a few versions of Word Count Plus and some have gliches or bugs with older (and some newer) versions of Firefox, but this one is a newer version, and seems to work ok for me. 6. Mozilla Firefox Addon: Read it Later; Read it Later another great one to have around too. Those of us who write for a living also read, a LOT, and don't always have time to get to everything we need to all at once. Read it Later does just what you'd think it would; it saves pages to read later with just one click. Then, when you have time, you can access your reading list from any computer or phone, even without an internet connection! 7. Mozilla Firefox Addon: Answers Search Answers is super for looking up something quick. Famous for "1-Click Answers" TM, Answers will save you even more time with Answer Tips that instantly deliver the information you are looking for. Just point at any word, hold the Alt key (or "Ctrl" in Linux, or "Option" key on a Mac) and click. Upon letting go, an Answer Tip in the form of a pop-up comes to your rescue...in other words, this one's as simple as it gets:by holding down the Alt key and clicking on a word, the window that pops up with information about that word comes from Answers.com. (You can have the results displayed in a full window if you'd rather.) There's also a "More" button in the pop-up that'll open a new tab with the full Answers.com results page. For phrases, you still have to highlight, right-click and choose "Look up on Answers.com" to get results in a new tab. Answers is still very helpful and speedy. 8. Mozilla Firefox Addon: Fox Lingo/Translator/Dictionary; Fox Lingo/Translator/Dictionary is a super tool for those of us who like to search outside our own language. It does so much more than just translate and has helped in many instances when I came across something that looked interesting but was in another language and helped me decipher the meanings as well as the actual translation. It also includes a " Web page and text translator, dictionary, grammar checker, auto translation, text-to-speech, and language learning services. Supports over 3,000 unique language pairs and 31 online translators, including Google Translate, Wikipedia, and Babylon. Languages: Arabic, Chinese, Czech, Danish, Dutch, English, French, German, Greek, Hebrew, Hungarian, Icelandic, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Norwegian, Polish, Portuguese, Romanian, Russian, Spanish, Swedish, Turkish, Ukrainian". Simply Amazing. 9. Mozilla Firefox Addon: SEO Blogger; SEO Blogger allows you to find the most sought-after keywords for your post without ever leaving your blog editing screen. "Whether you write or blog about business, politics or the hot topic of the moment, SEO Blogger allows you to find the most sought-after keywords for your subject without ever leaving your blog editing screen. The tool sits alongside whatever blog publishing software you're using so you can do keyword research and optimize your posts as you write. Then, simply hit "Publish" - and you're done!" Compare keywords instantly to find out which ones pack the most SEO punch. (For example, should you write an article about "sustainable buildings" or "green buildings"?). Save time - no need to go off to do separate keyword research. Automatically track how many times you've used each chosen keyword in your post. 10. Mozilla Firefox Addon: Google Semantics Google Semantics is a fabulous tool when you're looking for other ways to say something. This tool helps to get a synonym for the keyword during your search on Google, which helps for better SEO by using Google's own Synonyms (also refered as Latent Semantic Indexing (LSI) ) and is a vital element in Search Engine Optimization for blooging, article writing and more. 11. Mozilla Firefox Addon: Flagfox Flagfox is one of the best up and coming addons. This is a new one for me, but I had to include it in this list because of all the amazing things it claims. I'm still trying this one out but, right now all I can say is, "Wow". "Flagfox is an extension that displays a flag icon indicating the current webserver's physical location. Knowing where you're connected to adds an extra layer of awareness to your browsing and can be useful to indicate the native languages and legal jurisdictions that may apply. Clicking the flag icon loads the default action, Geotool, which gives a detailed map showing the city the server is in and other useful information such as its local time and ISP. Many other actions are available for a wide range of uses such as: Site safety and malware checks, Finding similar sites and reviews, Automatic translation to your language, SEO and web development research, Whois and DNS information, Quick URL shortening, Copying a server's IP address or other info, or you can create your own custom actions! 12. Mozilla Firefox Addon: Adblock Plus; "Annoyed by adverts? Troubled by tracking? Bothered by banners? Install Adblock Plus now to regain control of the internet and change the way that you view the web." Adblock Plus is a dream, 'nuff said. Perfect for personal or business emails, etc. I love this one! "Add your personal feeds (rss)- Automatically Share blog posts, bookmarks, videos, social feeds or daily quotes in your signature, Easy setup and configuration interface, Automatic signature insertion,Multiple email signatures (Business and Personal), Add logo or image to signature, Easily link to social services - links & Profiles + icons, Easily include IM (Instant Messaging) ID's + icons. " Mozilla Firefox Addon: Greasemonkey For the computer saavy writer, you may really like this one. I don't personally use it as it's just too complicated for little 'ole me, but as thousands of users and computerworld says, "Greasemonkey is a really nifty extension to use, as long as you know what you're doing with it. It can potentially get you in trouble because it allows JavaScripts written by other people to run in Firefox, and can drain CPU. If one of those scripts is malicious, your system could be at risk. To stay out of trouble, you should use Greasemonkey only with scripts you know are safe, either because you're familiar enough with JavaScript to satisfy yourself or because the script has enough comments at userscripts.org to indicate that people are using it with no ill effects. If you're not willing to do your homework, skip this extension altogether." - from Computerworld's Top 10 Firefox extensions to avoid list and from their Top 10 Best List.
