One of the most controversial Scriptures in the Bible concerns itself with the following passage: "When human beings began to increase in number on the earth and daughters were born to them, the sons of God saw that the daughters of humans were beautiful, and they married any of them they chose. Then the LORD said, 'My Spirit will not contend with humans forever, for they are mortal, their days will be a hundred and twenty years.' The Nephilim were on the earth in those days and also afterward when the sons of God went to the daughters of humans and had children by them. They were the heroes of old, men of renown. The LORD saw how great the wickedness of the human race had become on the earth, and that every inclination of the thoughts of the human heart was only evil all the time. The LORD regretted that He had made human beings on the earth, and His heart was deeply troubled. So the LORD said, 'I will wipe from the face of the earth the human race I have created and with them the animals, the birds and the creatures that move along the ground for I regret that I have made them.' But Noah found favor in the eyes of the LORD" (Gen 6:1-8, NIV). It is thought by many that the pre-Flood Nephilim were literally angels from heaven, and some say the Nephilim were the ancestors of the Olympian gods. This, of course, is problematic in lieu of Genesis 6: 1-8 where God says He will destroy all mankind along with the animals with the exception of Noah and his family. However, as we shall see, some memories of people and cities before the Flood could be recalled by Noah and his family. God gave Noah and his family a new start, but they did not start with a blank mind. They were able to remember everything in their exceedingly longevity before the Flood (Noah was 600 years old when he began to build the ark) which was passed down to Moses. However, many scholars believe that, in the light of historical tradition, the Nephilim were actually very large humans called giants. The name Nephilim is not in the King James Version in this pre-Flood account, but Nephilim does appear after the Flood in Numbers 13:33. In fact, when we researched an Interlinear Hebrew Bible 1 , we found in Genesis 6:4 and Numbers 13: 33 the term giants where the name Nephilim - -''¤-Æ'" '..."-Æ'" ''¢"...'¾''¢-')2) should be. People who were close to the Creation were almost perfect in their genetic makeup and mental capacities. One may assume that Noah and his family remembered the places people lived before the Flood. Having a global Flood would certainly change much of the topography, yet the main regions would have stayed similar. High mountain ranges and lower levels may be somewhat recognizable after the Flood waters receded. Old memories of people and places would also have remained. Perhaps some of the names of pre-Flood cities, like the names of pre-Flood people, remained in the memories of Noah and his family, and certainly names of pre-Flood cities could have been commemorated in the naming of new cities in the regions of the earth where they once used to exist before the Flood. Modern man has commemorated beloved places left behind when discovering new places, like the colonists of America did when naming cities like New York, New Orleans and Versailles, Indiana, etc., which might have been the case when Noah's sons and their descendants spread out over the earth and named the post-Flood cities. We believe that the Semitic tribes (Arabs and Hebrews) were descended from Noah's son, Shem, where we get the name Semite. In the Bible we read about a race of giants in Philistia, the coastal region of the land of Canaan which was to become the land of Israel. "Moreover the Philistines had yet war again with Israel; and David went down, and his servants with him, and fought against the Philistines: and David waxed (became) faint. And Ishbibenob, which was of the sons of the giant, the weight of whose spear weighed three hundred shekels of brass in weight, he being girded with a new sword, thought to have slain David. But Abishai the son of Zeruiah succoured him, and smote the Philistine, and killed him. Then the men of David sware unto him, saying, 'Thou shalt go no more out with us to battle, that thou quench not the light of Israel.' And it came to pass after this, that there was again a battle with the Philistines at Gob: then Sibbechai the Hushathite slew Saph, which was of the sons of the giant. And there was again a battle in Gob with the Philistines, where Elhanan the son of Jaareoregim, a Bethlehemite, slew the brother of Goliath the Gittite, the staff of whose spear was like a weaver's beam. And there was yet a battle in Gath, where was a man of great stature, that had on every hand six fingers, and on every foot six toes, four and twenty in number; and he also was born to the giant" ( 2 SAM 21:16-20, clarification and emphasis mine). Could the Peloponnese be the land of the Giants? The Peloponnese is a large island jetting out into the Mediterranean Sea, just a stone's throw from mainland Greece. It contains such cities as Patra (not to be confused with Petra in Jordan), Olympia (the biblical city of Corinth) and an interesting city called today Nafplion, or as the ancient Greeks called it Nauplia ( -- '½' -- '½''±'...'Æ'" ''¢"...'¡''¬ -- '½''» -- '½''¯ -- '½''±) '" remember this name. The Philistine Giants were believed to be part of the seafaring Phoenicians, who some say came from Greece or were of Greek descent. The Europeans were larger in stature than most Middle Easterners. In those days, it was not uncommon to refer to people of large stature as Titans; 2 sometimes these giants were called, "sons of God(s)."3 It is not uncommon for words to come down to us in various pronunciations and spellings. For example, Ellis Island, where many immigrants to the United States of America had to pass through to gain access to America, many times the foreign name became misspelled or had several different spellings attached to the names depending on who the processor was. Another example would be the Middle Eastern spelling of Ibrahem and Abraham, Yerushalayim or Jerusalem . Thus spelling down through the ages or even in our time for that matter (e.g., from Schuelter to Schlater or Schlatter or perhaps from Smyth to Smith). Names can look and even be pronounced slightly different. Jesus comes from Yeshua, yet it is also pronounced hay-sooo-ss in Latin. Therefore, words that look similar may in fact be the same word even though pronunciations may vary slightly from region to region. Consider the post-Flood, ancient city-state of Nafplion located on the Grecian Peloponnese, and compare it to the Chaldean name Nephilim. Ph has an "f" sound and depending on where the accent is placed, it could very well be pronounced the same or similar. (Some examples could be aluminum or the British Al-u-min-e-um, schedule or the British shed-u-wall and laboratory or the British la-bor-a-tory.) On some maps of the Greek Peloponnese we see an alternative spelling of Nafplion rendered as N afplion4 which is even closer to the sound of the name Nephilim. Perhaps these phonetic similarities may indeed expose the origin of the name Nephilim and its reference to the biblical rendering, "sons of God." Bear in mind that in Hebrew "im" at the end of a word is the English equivalent of an "s;" therefore, the plural of Nafplion or N afplion could be Nafplim This explanation would certainly clarify the misunderstanding of heavenly angels marrying and having children with the daughters of men; especially when Jesus, the true Son of God, made it clear that angels do not have sex and sternly pointed out why they were wrong in saying angels could perform sex with humans: "Jesus answered and said unto them, 'Ye do err, not knowing the scriptures, nor the power of God. For in the resurrection they neither marry, nor are given in marriage, but are as the angels of God in heaven' " (Matt 22:29-30, emphasis mine).5 It is good to reflect here that the Bible speaks in a more genteel and indirect way and, for the most part, does not just come out and say "do not have sex." The possible exception would be immoral sex acts out-of-wedlock which is referred to with the dishonorable term of fornication. Jude 6-7 is another misunderstood passage that refers back to the Genesis 6 account of the Nephilim that is used by those who wish to perpetuate the myth that heavenly angels have sex with human women. It reads, "And the angels who did not keep their positions of authority but abandoned their proper dwelling '" these He has kept in darkness, bound with everlasting chains for judgment on the great Day. In a similar way, Sodom and Gomorrah and the surrounding towns gave themselves up to sexual immorality and perversion. They serve as an example of those who suffer the punishment of eternal fire" (Jude 6-7, NIV). By using this passage of Scripture, some try to draw a sexual parallel between fallen angels and the sin of Sodom and Gomorrah, but that is not what the passage implies. On the other hand, for the sake of argument, let us assume that the masculine angels do have sex and fell into the same sin as Sodom and Gomorrah. Then we must ask ourselves, "What was the sin of Sodom and Gomorrah?" The answer is that the sin of Sodom and Gomorrah was the biblical sin of homosexuality. Therefore, if the masculine angels succumbed to homosexuality, then they would have no sexual desire for women because homosexual unions produce no children; but, as we shall see, although angels are masculine in appearance, they are not sexual beings. What is being presented here is that both the angels and the cities of Sodom and Gomorrah perverted the natural order on purpose for which they were created to function. So we must ask what the natural order of the angels is and for what purposes were they created. First, the word angel means messenger. They interface with the living God to glorify Him and continually worship and magnify His Holy Being. Angels do not need to reproduce because they are created immortal beings; therefore, there is no need for God to create more angels in order to replace them. While God made the entire angelic beings masculine (a trait, not sexuality), He created all that He needed to in the beginning. Because sex outside of marriage is fornication (a sin), a loving God would not have given angels a sexual desire that they would never need or use! Perhaps this is why there are no female angels in the Bible. 6 The highest orders of angels are the Cherubim and the Seraphim which are described in the Bible in the following way: "In the center, around the throne, were four living creatures, and they were covered with eyes, in front and in back. The first living creature was like a lion, the second was like an ox, the third had a face like a man, the fourth was like a flying eagle. Each of the four living creatures had six wings and was covered with eyes all around, even under its wings. Day and night they never stop saying, 'Holy, holy, holy is the Lord God Almighty, who was, and is, and is to come' " (Revelation 4:6-8, NIV). The next hierarchies are the Archangels and finally the angels. The most beautiful angel and highest rank of all was the one named, Lucifer, the Devil, also known as Satan. His body had beautiful rare jewels and musical adornments as we read in the following Scripture. "Thou hast been in Eden the garden of God; every precious stone was thy covering, the sardis, topaz, and the diamond, the beryl, the onyx, and the jasper, the sapphire, the emerald, and the carbuncle, and gold: the workmanship of thy tabrets 7 and of thy pipes 8 was prepared in thee in the day that thou was created. Thou art the anointed cherub that covers; and I have set thee so: thou was upon the holy mountain of God; thou hast walked up and down in the midst of the stones of fire. Thou was perfect in thy ways from the day that thou was created, till iniquity was found in thee" (Ezekiel 28:13-15). So now we learn that some type of iniquity or sin was found in the most high angel. What was the problem that caused God's dismay in him? Satan rejected his natural order of worshiping God and glorifying Him. Satan succumbed to the sin of envy and a lust for power. God Himself reveals Satan's sin: "You said in your heart, 'I will ascend to the heavens; I will raise my throne above the stars of God; I will sit enthroned on the mount of assembly, on the utmost heights of Mount Zaphon. I will ascend above the tops of the clouds; I will make myself like the Most High' " (Isaiah 14:13-14, NIV). Satan was cast out of heaven because of his rejection of the natural heavenly order and his violent and rebellious disposition: "Through your widespread trade you were filled with violence, and you sinned. So I drove you in disgrace from the mount of God, and I expelled you, guardian cherub, from among the fiery stones. Your heart became proud on account of your beauty, and you corrupted your wisdom because of your splendor. So I threw you to the earth; I made a spectacle of you before kings" (Isaiah 14:16-14, NIV). Satan took a third of the angels, who also rejected their natural order, with him when he fell (Rev 12:3-4). Both angels and the cities of Sodom and Gomorrah perverted their naturally created order. With the angels, it was the rejection of their natural high heavenly authority of ministering in love to God. With Sodom and Gomorrah, it was the rejection of their naturally created love for women. To put it another way, the angels exchanged their natural love for God for the love of one of their own, another angel (Satan). Likewise, the men of Sodom and Gomorrah exchanged their natural love for women for the love of one of their own, another man. In light of this, we now are able to see what is meant in Jude where we read, "And the angels who did not keep their positions of authority but abandoned their proper dwelling '" these He has kept in darkness, bound with everlasting chains for judgment on the great Day. In a similar way, Sodom and Gomorrah and the surrounding towns gave themselves up to sexual immorality and perversion. They serve as an example of those who suffer the punishment of eternal fire" (Jude 6-7, NIV). However, as we see with the fall of man in Genesis 3, not all angels were bound with chains in darkness. Indeed the worst one, Satan, was allowed free range on the earth with many of the other fallen angels who chose to follow him. Jesus did not need to tell the angels to not have sexual relations because it was understood that the purpose of marriage between a man and a woman is the only acceptable means of sanctifying sexual intercourse and the main purpose is continuing the human race. This was the point of the story. The lady in question kept marrying the next brother when her current husband died because she was barren and had no child to look after her in her old age. Therefore, in the Hebrew tradition, she married the next brother in line hoping for a child as each of her husbands passed away. If there were no sex, biblically speaking, there would be no need for marriage. Consequently, when Jesus says that humans who have died and come back in the resurrection, "...neither marry, nor are given in marriage, but are as the angels of God in heaven," He means that angels do not have sex; they do not need to procreate because they are immortal and because they never die, they never need to be replaced like mortal humans. How then do we account for the Nephilim? Who were they, and where did they come from? Consider this: if people from Rome are the Romans and people from Israel are the Israelis, then perhaps the ancient people from Nafilon were the Nephilim. Finally, anticipating what some of our genteel readers may be thinking, we must address the other angels that have come down to us in Christendom which arguably suggests that angels do have sex. In the medieval times there was the myth of incubus . Incubus was believed to be a male demon that lay with sleeping women and performing intercourse on the unwary dreamer. The female counterpart who seduced sleeping men was called Succubus . This Medieval legend alleges that demons of both genders prey sexually upon humans generally during the night time when the victim is in an unconscious state of sleep. (Note: As we have observed, there are no female angels recorded in the Bible.)9 In ancient Mesopotamia , around 2400 B.C., we read about the incubus epoch myth of Gilgamesh. Gilgamesh 's father, Lilu, was one of the demons who would seduce women while they were asleep.10 The counterpart of Lilu was a female demon named Lilitu who appeared in the erotic dreams of unsuspecting men.11 St. Augustine addressed this subject in his monumental work, "The City of God," giving credibility to these myths based on the numerous claims of people who allegedly underwent night time encounters with these demonic seducers. Augustine wrote, "There is, too, a very general rumor, which many have verified by their own experience, or which trustworthy persons who have heard the experience of others corroborate, that sylvans and fauns, who are commonly called incubi, had often made wicked assaults upon women."12 Another great scholar of the Roman Church, St. Thomas Aquinas inserted himself on this topic some 800 years later when he wrote, "Still if some are occasionally begotten from demons, it is not from the seed of such demons, nor from their assumed bodies, but from the seed of men taken for the purpose; as when the demon assumes first the form of a woman, and afterwards of a man; just as they take the seed of other things for other generating purposes."12 Thus Aquinas solidified the concept that both Incubi and Succubi were the same demon, morphing between male and female entities. Yet none of these learned scholars of the church ever consulted the Bible and the words of Christ as their authority; which of course made it quite clear that angels, fallen or otherwise, did not have sexual relations. It would be good to reflect at this point that the Bible also states that Satan is a deceiver, a murderer and the father of lies (Jn 8:44). End Notes 1 Green, J.P., General Editor and Translator, The Interlinear Bible, Hebrew, Greek, English (Lafayette: Sovereign Grace Publishers, 1985) Vol.1 2 The Hebrew rendering is as follows: " -- and all the people whom we saw in its midst (were) of men stature; and there we saw the giants the sons of Anak. Of the giants and we were in our eyes as grasshoppers" (Numbers 13: 32b-33). The Hebrew word translated giants was spelled (translating the Hebrew letters verbatim into English letters) "nplim" which used a "yud" instead of an "i" because the letter "I" does not exist in the Hebrew making the "mem" an "im" sound. "Im" is the Hebrew equivalent of the English letter "s" making the word plural (i.e., giants). 3 " Out of conflation (combining) with the Gigantes , various large things have been named after the Titans for their 'titanic' size. For example, the RMS Titanic or the giant predatory bird, Titanis walleri . The familiar name and large size of the Titans have made them dramatic figures suited to market-oriented popular culture." http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Titan_(mythology) > (clarification mine). Accessed 2011 April 23. 5Biblical citation: "The same day came to Him the Sadducees, which say that there is no resurrection, and asked Him, saying, 'Master, Moses said, 'If a man die, having no children, his brother shall marry his wife, and raise up seed unto his brother. Now there were with us seven brethren: and the first, when he had married a wife, deceased, and, having no issue, left his wife unto his brother: Likewise the second also, and the third, unto the seventh. And last of all the woman died also. Therefore, in the resurrection whose wife shall she be of the seven? for they all had her.' Jesus answered and said unto them, 'Ye do err, not knowing the scriptures, nor the power of God. For in the resurrection they neither marry, nor are given in marriage, but are as the angels of God in heaven' " (Matt 22:23-30). 6 It should be pointed out that there is one passage of Scripture which seems like the Bible is referring to female angels. This passage is found in the book of Zechariah where we read, "Then lifted I up mine eyes, and looked, and, behold, there came out two women, and the wind was in their wings; for they had wings like the wings of a stork: and they lifted up the ephah between the earth and the heaven. Then said I to the angel that talked with me, ''''¹..."whither do these bear the ephah?' " (Zechariah 5: 9-10). Consider for a moment that Zechariah does not refer to these females as angels, but women with stork wings and these creatures are never referred to again in Scripture; yet the person with whom he is talking is identified as an angel, and angels are referred to in the Bible around 300 times. We have examples of creatures that seem to defy nature in the world today. Is it hard to believe that God would create a mammal that would have characteristics of a bird? Consider the duckbilled platypus; it is venomous like a snake, has the bill of a duck and lays eggs like a duck, but it is a mammal with the fury body of an otter and the tail of a beaver! When it was first discovered, some scientists believed it was an elaborate hoax. The point being is that God did create creatures that defy science and sometimes it seems impossible for us to believe that they can exist. 7 Tabrets--the small cymbal-like parts of a tambourine 8 Pipes--a small woodwind instrument 9 See footnote 6 where we addressed theargument that there are no females in the Bible An argument to the statement that there are no females in the Bibl . 10 Sigmund Hurwitz , Gela Jacobson Trans., Lilith '"The First Eve (Zurich: Daimon Verlag, 1992). 11 Raphael Patai, The Hebrew Goddess: 3d ed.
